About BatiKita

Batik is a traditional cloth that has been made and worn in Malaysia and Indonesia for generations. Often hand-drawn and produced in limited quantities, each piece is unique, exclusive, special, and full of character.

Malaysia is a multi-racial country shaped by Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures, and that diversity is reflected in its food, traditions, and clothing. Batik is no exception. It is worn for meaningful moments and celebrations such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, graduations, and weddings, but it also has deep roots in everyday life.

My love for batik began in childhood, and it has always held a special place in my heart. My late grandmother and my mother both had beautiful personal collections, and one of my most treasured memories is the excitement my sisters and I felt when choosing which batik to wear for Hari Raya or wedding celebrations.

After living abroad for nearly 20 years, I realised that every time I returned home to Malaysia, I couldn’t wait to wear batik again. The moment I put it on, it felt like coming back to myself. I had missed how it looked, how it felt, and the way it made me feel. It also never felt right to me that the heritage passed down from my late grandmother and mother should only be worn “at home,” instead of being part of my life wherever I was.

That is how BatiKita was born.

Kita means “ours” because I want to share our beautiful batik so that you can make it yours too. BatiKita represents tradition and culture, but it is not limited to one generation, one moment, or one country. It is something to be appreciated and worn by everyone, in their own way.

For me, BatiKita means far more than just clothing. It was created with my family in my heart, especially my mother and my two daughters with the hope of building something beautiful that connects generations.

My mother has dedicated more than 20 years to making traditional Malay clothing, and that lifelong passion has opened the door to a rich and expansive batik market. Growing up, my sisters and I watched her work surrounded by beautiful fabrics silks, songket, and Batik. The colours, patterns, and quiet dedication of her craft shaped my love for Batik in ways I only truly appreciate now.

Being away from home for so long has made time with my family even more precious, so creating BatiKita with my mother feels like a true blessing. It allows us to reconnect, spend precious time together, and build something meaningful as mother and daughter.

Now, as a mother myself, I hope that through BatiKita, I can give my daughters the same treasured childhood memories I grew up with, so they will always feel connected to their roots, surrounded by the beauty of our traditional batik even away from home.

Because in the end, BatiKita is not just about Batik. It is more so about Kita - family, heritage, belonging, and the stories we carry with us wherever we go.
